Fall Fun Fest Planned The Session along with its Witness & Service Committee has planned a special fall neighborhood event here on the church grounds from 10:00a to 2:00p on September 13 with a rain date of October 4. This activity is important enough for us to begin telling you about it right now. Our Fall Fun Fest is envisioned as an opportunity for us as a church body to welcome our nearest neighbors to a fun event where they can enjoy themselves and learn something about our church and what it is doing. It is not an evangelistic crusade. But, it will “put our church on the map” in the neighborhood. Listen to the kind of things that will happen on that day. For children, there will be a moon bounce, a magic show, wishing well, face painting, and other appropriate activities. For adults, there will be The Improv (a barbershop quartet), a guitarist, and other singers and musicians. For all, there will be popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs, and drinks at very affordable prices. Cake walks will also be held. Tours of the church will be offered. Informational literature will be distributed. And, of course, your presence as a member of this congregation will be noted. As you can imagine, it will take a concerted effort on our part to offer such an event to the community. We will need all able-bodied members of our congregation to participate in planning, preparing, donating, and conducting this event. There will be committees for food, entertainment, set-up, publicity, parking, clean-up, security, sound system, and so on. We urge you to volunteer to work in an area that suits your interests and abilities by calling Janet Menassa (636-7415) or the church office (635-3894). However, we will be contacting individuals to enlist your support. Every member is encouraged to take part in this activity in some way. Let’s make it an all-church event! Communion - Prepare your hearts to commune with the Lord and with one another. On Sunday, May 4, we will celebrate Holy Communion.
The Session will hold its stated meeting on May 12 at 7:00p in Room 200. Reports will be mailed out prior to the meeting.

C-CAP 2007 - Front Royal-Warren County Congregational-Community Action Project (C-CAP) Family Emergency Assistance (Hours: 9a to 12 noon on weekdays.) C-CAP’s mission to provide needy citizens of Front Royal and Warren County with food, free clothing, fuel, and limited emergency financial assistance has been in place since 1978. It provides a safety net for those who cannot obtain aid from other existing support organizations, or where unusual circumstances require additional assistance. As a non-profit corporation, C-CAP has no paid staff but is run by 45 unpaid volunteers. Twelve of these have been with C-CAP for over 20 years. The support comes entirely from local churches, civic groups, individuals, and businesses. C-CAP receives no government funding. In May C-CAP will relocate from its present location at the Front Royal Presbyterian Church to the basement of St. Luke Community Clinic. The move will provide increased operating and storage space. Here are a few highlights: About 116 local families seek emergency financial, food, or clothing assistance from C-CAP each month. This is an increase of 18% over prior years. Aid given amounted to financial aid of $41,958; utilities of $24,658; 15,928 food items; clothing to 578 families. A total of 1,388 families sought aid.
The Cypriot, a novel - NEW Library addition (biography of Barnabas) The Book of Acts does not tell us as much as we would like to know about the intriguing and likable character of Barnabas. He fetches Paul to accompany him on the First Missionary Journey but is soon thereafter given second billing in the biblical narrative. By “reading between the lines” of Acts and “connecting the dots” traced by the Gospel accounts, Dr. Garriott makes the tribulations and triumphs of the first-century Church come alive through his fresh insights into the special challenges Barnabas met “behind the sets” of the young movement. The author’s storyline amplifies interpersonal relation-ships and events only hinted at in the original narratives, demystifies some improbable tales, and recreates—as a plausible source Mark and Luke consulted when compiling their writings—the lost memoirs of Joseph of Cyprus, better known as Barnabas. These great men had a story to tell to the nations—Dr. Garriott’s burnished prose high-lights the distinctive talents and foibles of his principal characters, and his finely etched, sensitive portrayal of Barnabas, Paul, and their “companions of the Way” boldly journeying through-out the ancient world enhances our understanding and appreciation of their accomplishments. Visit www.barnabasthecypriot.com online. The book has been added to our library. You may check it out.
Age-old principle: Help others to help yourself. This was the conclusion after looking at more than 2,000 healthy, church-going Presbyterians across the county. In a recent posting to MSN’s “health & fitness” site online (see Feel-good research), freelance writer Lisa Farino cited a study conducted by Carolyn Schwartz (a research professor at the Univ. of Massachusetts Medical School. During her study of another topic, she found that those who helped others benefited more than those receiving the help. http://health.msn.com/centers/depression/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid= 100167285>1=10305

Seniors Web Site What kind of volunteer opportunities are being offered for seniors in our congregations? As nonprofit budgets shrink and the healthy, active elder population grows, organizations must learn to tap into the expertise and vase knowledge of this volunteer base. The web site for the Senior Corps volunteer recruitment system is http://www.joinseniorservice.org, which links Americans ages 55-plus with top-quality volunteer opportunities in their communities. This online database is easily accessible – and free – to elders and nonprofits around the country.
